The 5-day MCA Approved Engine Course (AEC1) provides the crucial theoretical knowledge and practical hands-on experience of marine diesel engines and associated systems. Designed for individuals with an ‘entry-level’ knowledge expectation, this course will equip you to meet the stringent requirements of the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) Codes of Practice for various commercial vessels, including Large Commercial Sailing and Motor Vessels, Small Commercial Motor Vessels, and Small Workboats and Pilot Boats.

Led by highly experienced marine engineers, the AEC1 course offers a perfect blend of engaging classroom theory and practical application in our purpose-built engineering shed. While it won’t turn you into an expert overnight, you will gain the confidence to perform regular maintenance checks, conduct safety inspections, and effectively troubleshoot common engine problems.

The AEC2 qualification significantly broadens your career prospects, enabling you to work in dual deck/engineer roles or as a small vessel engineer on a diverse range of vessels, including commercial Crew Transfer Vessels, tug boats, private pleasure vessels, yachts, and superyachts. This course is a core requirement for your Small Vessel CoC and forms a vital part of the Second Officer qualification for small vessels less than 3000 gross tonnes/under 9000 kW. Combined with your AEC1, the AEC2 certificate also contributes to an MCA Marine Engine Operators Licence (MEOL), a critical qualification for Chief Engineers on UK-flagged vessels.
