Elementary First Aid
Course content
The Elementary First Aid course module is a combination of theory and practical training for basic first aid and life saving skills. This course is intended for all seafaring personnel who need to be able to practice elementary first aid on board ship. It comprises the knowledge required in STCW 95 Table A-VI/1-3 and provides an introduction to the principles of first aid. It shows how to respond to the most common medical emergencies.
- Dealing with an emergency
- Priorities of treatment
- Casualty transport
- Basic Life Support (CPR)
- Shock management
- Bandaging
- Wounds/Bleeding
- Burns/Scalds
What is STCW-95?
STCW-95 stands for Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping. Created by the International Maritime Organisation in 1978 and amended in 1995, the STCW-95 code came into international effect in February 2003. The STCW-95 code was introduced to set minimum international training standards for professional mariners.
What does STCW-95 Basic Safety Training contain?
STCW-95 Basic Training consists of four modules; Personal Survival Techniques, Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting, Elementary First Aid, Personal Safety and Social Responsibility.
At South West Maritime Academy the STCW-95 course takes five days to complete, and includes your Proficiency in Security Awareness module alongside the core essential courses. You can book onto the full course or individual modules, but please be aware that you need to complete all four modules to get your STCW-95 Basic Training certificate. This however sometimes differs dependent on your role i.e although recommended to complete all four modules marine surveyors and others may only require the STCW-95 Personal Survival Techniques module otherwise known as Sea Survival.
Should I have a STCW-95 certificate although I already hold yachting qualifications?
Do I need to do all modules?
Any persons wishing to work at sea are required to complete all 4 basic modules and one of the mandatory security training courses depending on your role. However there are exceptions whereby some companies stipulate you only require the Personal Survival Techniques (Sea Survival) module if you are simply transferring to complete contract work on a wind farm or inland structure. We would highly recommend you check this with your employer prior to booking on any course.
Do I need to provide any of my own equipment?
No, everything you require for the training will be provided. Comfortable casual clothing for the classroom theory sessions and a couple of sets of clothes you don’t mind getting a little dirty/wet (tracksuit bottoms and T-shirt) for the practical elements.
How can I book onto STCW-95 Basic Safety Training?
You can book onto STCW-95 Basic Training at South West Maritime Academy by registering using the link below or through our online booking tab at the top of the page. You can book onto separate modules or the full course for a discounted rate.
