As people are unsure as to what training they require please find a simple explanation below of the new security training requirements.
Since 11 September 2001, the issue of security across the world has changed enormously, with new practices and procedures to ensure safety. For the shipping industry this has included the implementation of the 2010 Manila updates.
This training became mandatory as of the 1st January 2014 as part of the 2010 Manila updates. From June 1st 2015 Port State Control will start enforcing the new regulations for Security training for those ‘Employed or engaged’ on vessels which the ISPS code applies. Non-compliance may result in delayed sailing until the vessel has become fully compliant. More information can be found within Marine Information Notice 480 (M)
The three levels to which training has been set:
Security related familiarisation
A familiarisation delivered by the SSO, or other equally qualified person making all crew members aware of specific security issues onboard that specific vessel prior to them being assigned shipboard duties.
Proficiency in Security Awareness (PSA)
Must be undertaken by ALL above not holding a Designated Security duty on board. This includes Stewards, galley staff, entertainment staff, Pilots, etc.
Proficiency in Designated Security Duties (PDSD)
Must be undertaken by any crew who have designated duties under the Ship Security Plan. Gangway watches, stowaway searches, baggage searches, etc.
