STCW Basic Safety Training

Our STCW Proficiency in Security Awareness (PSA) conforms to the STCW 2010 Manila amendments.

What is the Proficiency in Security Awareness course and who is it for?

All seafarers employed or engaged in any capacity on ships required to comply with the ISPS (International Ship and Port Security) code are required to undertake the Proficiency in Security Awareness course.

The course provides necessary knowledge for personnel intending to work on ships who will not have any designated security duties but who all the same require a heightened awareness of general security issues and practices.

Upon completion, candidates should be able to demonstrate competence to:

  • Contribute to the enhancement of maritime security through heightened awareness
  • Recognise security threats
  • Understand the need for and methods of maintaining security awareness and vigilance.

This course can be taken as a stand-alone module or is included as part of our STCW Basic Safety Training course package.

Do I need to complete security training to work at sea?

Yes. As part of the Manilla amendments 2010 all seafarers are required to complete security training. The level of training depends on their specific role.

Which course do I need to complete?

Proficiency in Security Awareness (PSA): Must be undertaken by ALL above not holding a
Designated Security duty on board. This includes Stewards, galley staff, entertainment staff, Pilots, etc.

Proficiency in Designated Security Duties (PDSD): Must be undertaken by any crew who have designated duties under the Ship Security Plan. Gangway watches, stowaway searches, baggage searches, etc.
